La notizia è quella dell’acquisizione di Antinori della piena proprietà della cantina californiana Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars e potete leggerla più o meno ovunque, perché è una di quelle notizie che è giusto facciano rumore. Ma ciò a cui vale la pena dedicare un po’ di righe è una storia, o forse sono più storie, che s’intrecciano all’attualità.
La prima di queste storie non inizia in California, anzi, al tempo della nostra storia il territorio che oggi chiamiamo California non era ancora apparso sulle mappe degli esploratori europei. Questa storia, invece, inizia curiosamente in quello che oggi chiamiamo Chianti Classico, vicino a San Casciano Val di Pesa e più precisamente a Sant’Andrea in Percussina.
Siamo negli anni tra il 1513 e il 1516, a quei tempi la famiglia Antinori già commerciava vino ma il nostro interesse non è per questa bevanda bensì per un libro – Il Principe di Niccolò Machiavelli – una di quelle opere che segnano un discrimine vero tra chi l’abbia letta e chi no. Discorso che vale per pochi altri testi universali quali i Dialoghi di Confucio o le strisce dei Peanuts.

The news is that of Antinori’s acquisition of full ownership of the Californian winery Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, and you can read about it more or less anywhere, because it is one of those news items that is right to make noise. But what is worth devoting a few lines to is a story, or perhaps more than one story, that is intertwined with current events.
The first of these stories does not begin in California; indeed, at the time of our story, the territory we now call California had not yet appeared on the maps of European explorers. This story, on the other hand, curiously begins in what we now call Chianti Classico, near San Casciano Val di Pesa and more precisely in Sant’Andrea in Percussina.
We are in the years between 1513 and 1516. At that time, the Antinori family was already trading in wine, but our interest is not in this drink but in a book – The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli – one of those works that mark a real distinction between those who have read it and those who have not. This is true of few other universal texts such as the Dialogues of Confucius or the Peanuts strips.
